Freshmen:
Xavier took the opening kickoff and used the entire first quarter to march the ball down field to North Haven's goal line and on the first play of the second quarter, scored a touchdown and kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
From there, North Haven's defense tightened up forcing a pair of punts as the Indians would score 22 unanswered points by half time. Another pair of TDs in the second half ballooned the lead to 34-7 before Xavier scored to cut
it to 34-14 in the 4th. North Haven was inside Xavier's 5 yard line when time expired.
Varsity:
The gold standard of Connecticut high school football over the last three years has been Xavier, winner of three straight CIAC Class LL championships.
During that run, the Falcons won 38 of 39 games by an average of 27 points.
This fall, having defeated one of the FCIAC's top programs, Staples, by a healthy margin during Week 1, the Falcons were seen by many as the state's best team as they rolled into North Haven.
Last season, the two teams met in Middletown and Xavier won 49-12.
The rematch would prove to be quite different.
North Haven's defense immediately came up big, stopping Xavier's first drive, which allowed the Indians to score the first points of the game on a 24-yard run by senior quarterback Mike Halloran.
Sabrina Fronte converted her first of six point-after kicks, and the Indians had a 7-0 lead after one quarter.
After the Falcons made it a 7-6 game, the Indians came right back and scored on an out pass from Halloran to junior Zach Kastenhuber, who slipped a tackle and ran for a 71-yard TD.
Fronte's kick put North Haven up 14-6.
A short dribbler on the ensuing kickoff gave Xavier favorable field position, and the Falcons cashed in on a 16-yard touchdown run by QB Joe Carbone to make it 14-13.
But North Haven proved their advantage was no fluke when Halloran connected with senior Evan Manameit for a 13-yard TD to give the home team an eight-point halftime lead.
After intercepting Halloran in the third, the Falcons ultimately scored a touchdown on 21-yard pass play. Their two-point conversion knotted the score at 21, and that was the tally with one quarter to play.
In the fourth, Xavier's Carbone threaded, what looked like, a perfect pass over the middle, but Manameit leaped high to make an interception.
Halloran then connected with Kastenhuber for a 50-yard touchdown over the middle to put North Haven ahead for good, 28-21.
After another Falcon turnover, the Indians began to eat up the clock with their ground attack. Suraci then broke free and took off for a 45-yard touchdown to expand North Haven's lead to 35-21.
Xavier proved, however, that the game was far from over.
The Falcons scored quickly on a 28-yard touchdown strike to cut their deficit to 35-28.
The Indians then got back to the business of grinding it out on the ground to eat up most of what was left of the clock, and scored once more when the Falcons bunched the line on a third and short situation. Suraci hit the line, bounced off and ran for a 39 yard touchdown to seal the deal.
Fronte's sixth point-afterkick made it 42-28, the final tally.
North Haven amassed 466 yards on offense, led by Suraci's two touchdowns and 12 carries for 142 yards. Halloran completed 4 of 14 passes, three for touchdowns. Kastenhuber made three catches for 130 yards and two scores.
Seniors Austin Mahon and Suraci led the defense with 14 tackles apiece.
Fred Sanchez had a pair of interceptions for the victors.

The North Haven High School football team returned 16 seniors for the 2013 campaign, led by captains Ethan Suraci, Patrick Mikos, Austin Mahon and Michael Siwek.
North Haven has a challenging 11-game schedule on tap. New this year is a pair of matchups with Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference teams Bridgeport Central and Darien.
In addition, NHHS will face last year's Class LL state champion, Xavier, at home and Class L champion Daniel Hand in Madison.
But up first, NHHS traveled to Bridgeport to take on the Central Hilltoppers at Kennedy Stadium.
The Indians won the toss and deferred, opting to kick off. This strategy paid off immediately as senior Fred Sanchez returned an interception 30 yards for the game's first touchdown.
Sophomore place kicker Sabrina Fronte connected on her first of six extra point kicks on the day to put North Haven up 7-0 early.
Late in the first, Suraci bowled in from a yard out to increase the lead to 14-0.
Sophomore Michael Montano ran for a 51-yard touchdown and Suraci added his second score, from 13 yards, and the Indians took a 28-0 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, senior QB Mike Halloran connected with junior end Zach Kastenhuber on a 14-yard touchdown reception, and North Haven was rolling, 35-0.
The Indians weren't finished.
Senior Cole Pecora scampered 38 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to put his team up 42-0.
The Hilltoppers scored late on a 46-yard pass play to spoil the shutout.
North Haven rushed for 357 yards, led by Montano, who ran eight times for 157 yards. Pecora added 68 yards on the ground and Suraci compiled 57 yards to go along with a pair of touchdowns.
