11/19/08: Week 11 North Haven Freshmen 41, Amity Freshman 14

11/19/08:
North Haven Freshmen 14 0 14 13 - 41
Amity Freshmen 0 7 7 0 - 14

11/19: Mark Zurlis' opening kickoff landed and rolled along the sideline. Amity assumed it would go out of bounds and when it didn't, North Haven covered it up at the Spartan 30 to retain possession. When it got to be 3rd and long, Zurlis picked up 8 big yards with a catch and run, then on the next play, took it around the left end all the way to the 8 for a 1st down.  QB Joe Schwab scored from there on a keeper and his first of 4 TDs on the day. Zurlis' kick made the score 7-0. Ealy in Amity's first drive, Billy McDonald intercepted a pass and returned it for a 40 yard TD. The kick from Zurlis made it 14-0.

11/19: After an exchange of possessions, Amity finally put together a drive and moved to the Indian's 30 before they came up against 3rd and long. Scrambling in the backfield, the Spartan QB threw on the run into the end zone for a TD, which cut the lead to 14-7 at the half. North Haven took the second half kick and went right down and scored - highlighted by a 35 yard run by Schwab and then on 3rd and long, Schwab rolled out and threw a nice pass to Spencer Oakes, who was pushed out at the 5. A couple plays later, Schwab scored on a short keeper. The kick was blocked, so the score was 20-7. Amity took the kickoff and ran it back deep into NH territory. #45 busted in from the left on a 7 yard run and the kick made it 20-14.

11/19: The Indians took the next kick and went right down and scored with runs by Schwab, Seth Rodriguez and Billy McDonald. Schwab carried it in for the touchdown and then flipped to Zurlis for the 2 point conversion to make the score 28-14. Amity's next drive saw the Spartans move down down to to Indian's 30. On the first play of the 4th quarter, Mark Zurlis made an interception and ran it back for 10 yards. A couple of big Zurlis runs, and then Schwab faked into the line and ran for 40 yard TD. The kick was no good, so the score was now 34-14.  Amity's next drive was also stopped when a long pass was interception by Schwab. The Indians turned that into another score with a nice drive culminating when McDonald took a direct snap and ran it in for a TD. Zulis' kick made the final score 41-14.

11/14/08: Week 10 North Haven Freshmen 43, Jonathan Law Freshman 8

11/14/08:
Jonathan Law Freshmen 0 0 0 8 - 8
North Haven Freshmen 29 7 7 0 - 43

11/14: North Haven won the toss and Frank Daniele took the kickoff all the way back to the Lawmen 40 yard line. After a 5 yard penalty for illegal motion, QB Joe Schwab took it down to the 10 on the first play and then into the end zone on the second for a TD. A bad snap on the kick was salvaged by Schwab who threw into the end zone to Billy McDonald for 2 to make the score 8-0. The Lawmen's first two drives ended with punts, and the Indians capitalized with 2 more touchdowns. The first one came after a great fake into the line by Schwab, and then a 40 yard jaunt around the right side. Mark Zurlis made the kick to make it 15-0.

11/14: After the next Law punt, North Haven scored again as McDonald had a nice run around the right side and Zurlis had several busting runs up the middle, including a 12 yarder for the TD. The kick was no good, but the score was now 21-0. Law finally was able to get a first down and move across midfield but they turned the ball over on downs. And the Indians scored almost instantly as Schwab followed another great fake and went untouched for almost 50 yards for the score. Another bad snap and a Schwab to McDonald pass increased the score to 29-0 at the end of the first quarter.

11/14: when Law's next drive came up against 4th down, a pass over the middle was intercepted by Ryan McLane, who weaved his way through traffic down to the goal line and through a couple of tackles for another touchdown. Another Zurlis kick made it 36-0. Law worked their way down to the Indians' 10 right before the half but were intercepted in the end zone by Tony Pagliaro. John-Paul Deveglia scored a rushing TD in the 3rd to increase the lead to 43-0 after Zurlis' 3rd kick. Late in the 4th quarter, the Lawmen finally got on the board after converting on a 4th and long with a pass to the goal line, and then a short run. A pass to the tight end made the final score 43-8.

11/06/08: Week 9 East Haven JV 28,  North Haven Freshmen 14

11/06/08:
North Haven Freshmen 0 0 0 14 - 14
East Haven JV 6 8 6 8 - 28

11/6: North Haven's Freshmen traveled to East Haven on a rainy night to play the Yellow Jacket's 14 man JV team, which is a mixture of Freshmen and Sophomore players. North Haven took the opening kick and moved across the timeline before having to punt the ball away. East Haven moved back into Indian territory, keeping it mostly on the ground, using misdirection, short snap counts and counter plays. When it got to be 4th and 4 from the 34, the East Haven QB rolled out and threw on the run to an open receiver down at the 4 for a first down. A couple of plays later, East Haven scored a TD and the running play that followed came up short, so the score was 6-0. In the second quarter, East Haven put together another long drive and scored on a 9 yard run through the right side. A pass over the middle went for 2 more points to make it 14-0.

11/6: North Haven just could not get that crucial first down, missing pass plays by inches, and coming up inches short on 4th down tries. They could not crack East Haven's red zone and went into the half scoreless. Opening the 2nd half, a booming kickoff by Mark Zurlis and a 5 yard penalty pinned East Haven deep in their own end. On their first play, East Haven used a bit of trickery - all of a sudden #34 was sprinting straight through the line and going for an 80 yard touchdown to make the score 20-0. After another failed Indian drive, East Haven took another drive deep into North Haven territory with the help of a blown interception call keeping their drive alive. Despite the generosity, East Haven ultimately fumbled and North Haven took over on their own 5.

11/6: The Indians worked their way to midfield with some nice runs by Zurlis, QB Joe Schwab and Joe Burr as the 3rd quarter came to a close. Shortly after the 4th quarter started, Billy McDonald came back around and took a handoff and ran around the end and down the inside sideline for a 51 yard touchdown. The conversion failed, but North Haven was back in this one at 20-6. East Haven was 3 downs and out, and had to punt the ball back. A couple of plays into the next drive, Schwab juked his way through the line and broke off a 65+ yard TD. McDonald scored the 2 point conversion around the left end to make the score 20-14. But East Haven used up most of the remaining time in the quarter, scoring with just under a minute to go and adding the 2 point conversion to extend the lead back out to 28-14, which ended up being the final score.

10/29/08: Week 8 North Haven Freshmen 27, Cheshire Freshmen 12

10/29/08:
Cheshire Freshmen 0 6 0 6 - 12
North Haven Freshmen 6 15 0 6 - 27

10/29: Cheshire won the toss, took the kick and moved all the way down inside North Haven's 30 before turning the ball over on downs.  Indian's QB Joe Schwab moved the ball across the timeline with a 25 yard run, and that was followed by big runs by Seth Rodriguez and Mark Zurlis. Billy McDonald took a pitch and got the ball down to the Ram goal line before Schwab carried it in for the touchdown. The kick was no good, so the score was 6-0. Cheshire's next drive stalled, and after a short punt, North Haven got the ball back at midfield as the first quarter came to an end. As the 2nd quarter started, North Haven went right down and scored after Billy McDonald gained an key first down by catching a pass along the sideline when Schwab had to roll to his right and throw on the run to get it to him.

10/29: Runs by Zurlis and Rodriguez got the ball in close before Schwab scored his second TD on a keeper and also carried in the 2 point conversion to open up a 14-0 lead. On their next possession, Cheshire finally got their run and shoot offense working and moved the ball into North Haven's red zone with a series of screen passes and dump offs. McDonald then stepped in front of a slant pass and took it the other way for a 90 yard touchdown. The kick by Zurlis was good to up the lead to 21-0. Cheshire took the next booming kick off by Zurlis and scored quickly on the strength of the scrambling capabilities of their QB and his ability to throw on the run. They sprinkled in a few runs out of the shotgun with speedy #11 before #23 made a leaping catch in the back left corner of the end zone for a touchdown with seconds left in the half. The kick attempt that followed was short, so it was 21-6 at halftime.

10/29: In the 3rd, each team went back and forth but neither could mount and serious drive. There were several punts and a couple of turn over on downs. In the 4th quarter, North Haven moved inside the Ram's 35 before their drive stalled. A short punt was then fielded and returned the other way down the far sideline for a 92 yard TD by the Rams' #11. The conversion attempt was a pass, which was high and out of bounds, so the score was now 21-12. On the ensuing kickoff, Cheshire recovered an onsider at the Indians 40, but on their next play, their QB fumbled it away while scrambling and was hit from behind by Jason Cancel. NH recovered on their own 42 and then marched down into scoring position behind runs by Rodriguez and a couple of pounding runs by Mark Zurlis up the middle. Joe Schwab had a couple of great fakes into the line and then scrambles for yardage, the last of which went for a touchdown to make the final score 27-12.

10/23/08:
Sheehan Freshmen 0 0 14 14 - 28
North Haven Freshmen 14 12 7 8 - 41

On Sheehan's first series, Joe Schwab stepped in front of a pass and returned it 50 yards for a TD, and then carried the 2 point conversion into the end zone for a 14-0 lead. In the second, the Indians executed a beautiful half back option play with a twist. Billy McDoanld took the handoff, ran to his right, stopped, and threw back to QB Joe Schwab for a 20 yard gain.

10/23: A couple of plays later Schwab ran it down to the goal line and Zurlis carried it in for the TD. The kick was wide left, so the score was 20-0. Josh Celano picked off a pass right before the half for North Haven. Schwab then moved the ball into the Trojan red zone with a couple of keepers and then fired a pass to Zurlis at the pylon, and Mark busted in for a 12 yard TD. The 2 point conversion was stuffed, but the Indians took a 26 point lead into halftime. Sheehan got the ball to open the 2nd half and scored a touchdown on their first play when the QB hit an open receiver in the flat, who then fired it down field for a long completion. The Titans threw a pass in the end zone to cut the score to 26-8.

10/23: North Haven responded on the 2nd play of their next series when Mark Zurlis busted through the right side and went 48 yards for his fourth TD, then kicked the extra point to go back up 33-8. Sheehan's next drive ended with a 14 yard pass for a TD, but the run after failed but they were back in this one at 33-14. Starting off the 4th quarter, the Titans scored quickly with a 50 yard pass play, then threw into the end zone for 2 more to cut the lead to 33-22. But on the ensuing kickoff, Joe Burr went diagonally across the field for a 92 yard TD return. Joe Schwab carried it in to put North Haven back ahead at 41-22. Near the end of the game, Sheehan scored once more on a QB keeper, and their conversion attempt was rejected, so the final score was 41-28.

10/16/08: Week 6 Daniel Hand Freshmen 21, North Haven Freshmen 13

10/16/08:
North Haven Freshmen 0 7 0 6 - 13

(Photos)

10/16: The Indians finally put together a nice drive to get on the board before the half, mixing it up with the pounding runs of Mark Zurlis up the middle, and sweeps by Billy McDonald around the ends, and QB keepers by QB Joe Schwab, who scored the TD. Zurlis added the extra point to cut the lead to 14-7. Hand pushed the ball into North Haven's end but time ran out and the score remained 14-7 at the half. The Indians took the 2nd half kickoff, but had to punt it away. The Tigers used the opportunity and marched down the field with a series of screen passes, dump offs over the middle and redirection runs to score a 3rd TD and open up a 21-7 lead.

10/16: The Indians scored an impressive TD in the fourth quarter when Billy McDonald took a pitch and rolled right and fired a perfect strike to Spencer Oakes for a long gain. When it got to be 4th and 10 from the 12, Joe Schwab took the direct snap and zip zagged his way into the end zone. The extra point attempt was wide, but North Haven closed the gap to 21-13. With time running out, the Indians finally forced the Tigers to punt, and got one last chance to tie. With the goal line 80 yards away, Schwab had a nice 50 yard run and got out of bounds on the Tigers' 30 with 9 seconds to play. The Indians scored a second quarter TD when Billy McDonald took a pitch and went around the left end but they could not convert for extra points and went into the half down 8-6. Mark Zurlis' booming kick to start the 2nd half pinned Hillhouse deep in their own end, and when the Academics couldn't convert in 3 downs, they had to punt it away.

9/25: The Indians took advantage of the short kick and quickly scored on the strength of a long run by Zurlis and a QB keeper by Joe Schwab.
