The Freshmen Indians finished their 2012 campaign with a 6-1 record by defeating Amity by the score of 35-6. In the first quarter, Mike Montano scored a short touchdown and Brendan Eckles kicked the extra point to put North Haven up 7-0. On the first play of 2nd quarter, Montano threws a pass over the middle to Jake Kastenhuber, who was two steps ahead of his defender, and he took it to the house for a 70 yard touchdown to put North Haven up 13-0. Nick Ponzio took a hand off and threw a 37 pass to Montano down left sideline for a touchdown to give the Indians a 19-0 lead. Trapped in their own end and desperate to get back into this game, the Spartans went for it on 4th down and came up short. North Haven made a first down and then Brendan Eckles kicked a 32 yd field goal from the right hash to give North Haven a 22-0 lead over Amity at the half. The Indians would score twice more in the second half and Amity also got a tocudown to make the final score 35-6.

Week 9 Game Schedule
11/12/12: North Haven Freshmen 39, Lyman Hall Freshmen 7
11/12/12: North Haven Varsity 48, Lyman Hall Varsity 14
11/13/12: North Haven JV 42, Lyman Hall JV 14

Week 9

This year's Varsity Football schedule has been altered 4 times now overall and 3 times in the last four weeks due to weather related incidents. The latest being last Friday's game versus Lyman Hall. It was moved to Monday evening at Fitzgerald Field in Wallingford due to a freak Northeast snow storm that dropped up to a foot of snow across the region.

North Haven, playing their final regular season road game, built up a 42-0 lead by early in the third quarter behind Seniors Quincy Pecora (3 TDs) and Jalon White (2 TDs) who did the bulk of the scoring while Junior Ethan Suraci had one each as well. Senior Sam Biller was 4 of 5 on conversion kicks and Pecora ran in a 2 point conversion. Lyman Hall passed their way to a pair of touchdowns to cut the score to 42-14 before NHHS's Junior Chris Brockett broke free for a 45 yard touchdown with 1:32 to play to cap the scoring at 48-14.

Things got out of hand very quickly in this game for the Trojans. After they kicked off, Suraci broke through the line for the Indians and took off for a 60 yard touchdown to put North Haven out in front 7-0 only 1:06 into the game. A little over 3 minutes later, Pecora took off for his first score, this one from 86 yards out which made it 13-0. North Haven would tally one more touchdown before the end of the first quarter ended when White ran one in from 34 yards out. A bad snap on the conversion attempt was scooped up by Pecora and he ran in for 2 more points to make it 21-0. In the second quarter, Pecora ran his second touchdown in from 67 yards out and White also added his second from 7 yards out and the Indians took a 35-0 lead into halftime.

Led by Pecora (5 carries for 190 yards), White (11 carries for 96 yards) and Suraci (5 carries for 92 yards), the Indians kept the ball on the ground and amassed an impressive 500 yards rushing. They only threw the ball four times and Junior Evan Manameit completed one of them to Sophomore Joe Corniello for 26 yards. 37 different players made at least one tackle, but Junior Nick McInnis led the team with seven.

North Haven's record now stands at 6-3 with one home game remaining on Thanksgiving day versus Amity. Even with a victory in that game, the Class L State playoffs seem to be an extreme long shot at this point.

The North Haven JV team wrapped up their 2012 season with a 42-14 win at Lyman Hall High School to finish at 6-2. The Indians took the opening kickoff and went right down and scored in 10 plays on runs un the middle culminated by a Christain Black 1 yard run. Joe Corniello kicked the conversion point that followed for a 7-0 lead.

The Trojans first drive did not earn a first down and when they went to punt, the ball was snapped past the punter and North Haven took over 11 yards away from a second score. Three plays later, Evan Manameit passed to Corniello for a TD and Corniello kicked the extra point for a 14-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Corniello intercepted a pass and took it to the house with a 50 yard TD run. Chris Brockett's kick that followed was off so the score was 20-0. Before halftime, Lyman Hall passed for a 5 yard TD and rushed for a 2 point conversion to cut the score to 27-8.

Mike Montano ran in a 25 yard TD in the fourth quarter and Corniello's kick upped the lead to 34-8 before the Trojans could score again with a 69 yard pass play to make it 34-14. Montano added a 13 yard touchdown run and Manameit, who was holding for a conversion kick, threw to Matt Coppola for a 2 pointer to make the final score 42-14.

Week 8 Game Schedule
11/1/12: Foran Freshmen vs. North Haven Freshmen, canceled
11/3/12: North Haven JV vs. Foran JV, canceled
11/4/12: North Haven Varsity 28, Foran Varsity 7
11/5/12: North Haven JV 21, North Branford JV 7

Week 8

Last Friday night's game at Foran High School was moved to Sunday afternoon because of hurricane Sandy. The host Lions were on a 4 game winning streak and had just come off a big win for their program over Notre Dame of West Haven. The winner of this matchup would win the SCC Division II title, a feat Foran had last accomplished in 2008.

The Lions opened the game attempting an onside kick, which North Haven covered up to earn great starting field position around midfield. The Indians slowly moved the ball down to the Lions red zone before Senior Jalon White lost the handle and fumbled it away. Foran wasted no time going to the air to move down to the Indians 18 yard line before turning the ball over on downs. North Haven then slugged their way up the middle back into Foran's side of the field before stalling and having to punt. The Lions then marched all the way to North Haven's 5 yard before missing a 22 yard field goal.

North Haven then put together another nice drive and moved deep into Foran territory following a White pass to Junior tight end Alex Baglioni for a 31 yard gain, but Junior Ethan Suraci fumbled it away while trying to stretch for extra yardage.

After forcing the Lions to punt, the Indians got the ball back with under 2 minutes to play with favorable field position. A pair of nice runs by Suraci and Senior Quincy Pecora moved the ball to Foran's 15 yard line and then White powered the ball to 2 yard line with 51 seconds left in the half. From there Suraci busted in up the middle for the game's first score. Senior Sam Biller tacked on the extra point and the Indians took a 7-0 lead into halftime.

The Lions' first drive of the second half ended on North Haven's 22 yard line when Junior Freddy Sanchez intercepted a Jake Kasuba pass. From there, North Haven marched methodically to Foran's side of the field but came up against a 4th and 1 on the 35 yard line. Suraci took the handoff and plowed through a handful of Lion tacklers and raced his way to a touchdown and a 14-0 North Haven lead.

On the Indians' next drive, they moved the ball all the way to Foran's goal line and attempted to put the game away when White tried to go up and over the pile but was stopped just short of the goal line. On the next play, the Lions fumbled the ball in the end zone and Pecora recovered it for a touchdown and a 21-0 Indian lead.

Determined to keep this a game, Foran passed their way down for their first score to cut the lead to 21-7, but North Haven sealed the victory with a nice drive alternating runs by White and Suraci to get the ball to the Lions' 8 yard line. Junior Mike Halloran then had a 5 yard run before White took it in for a 3 yard touchdown which capped the scoring at 28-7. With the win, North Haven improved their overall record to 5-3 and clinched the SCC Divison II East title for the 5th time in the last 6 seasons.

Ethan Suraci led the offense with 19 carries for 195 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jalon White chipped in with 28 carries for 138 yards, a touchdown and was 2 out of 2 passing for 45 yards. White also led the defense with 11 tackles.

The JV Indians had another game wiped off their schedule last week when their macthup with Foran was canceled due to Hurricandy Sandy. Luckily for them North Branford was in the same position and the Athletic Directors from both schools got together and scheduled a matchup with each other. North Haven gladly traveled to Colafati Field in North Branford on a very cold Monday afternoon. The Indians were able to overcome their overall sloppy play and win this one by the score of 21-7 despite three giveaways and a pair of failed trips in the red zone.

North Branford fumbled the ball away on their opening possession and North Haven cashed in with a 17 yard run for touchdown by Chris Brockett. Joe Corniello converted the kick that followed to make it 7-0. North Branford's second drive ended like their first, with a fumble, but the Indians could not convert this one into points as they moved the ball inside the Thunderbirds' 5 yard line before fumbling the ball back. After forcing a North Branford punt, North Haven moved down close to their opponent's goal line before Evan Manameit was was stopped on a 4th down attempt from the 2 yard line and the Indians took a 7-0 lead into halftime.

Nick Ponzio received the kickoff to start the second half and had a great run up to midfield, but on the first play that followed, the ball was snapped over Manameit's head and North Branford recovered. The Thunderbirds couldn't capitalize, however, and ultimately turned the ball over on downs. Shortly thereafter, Manameit connected with Zach Kastenhuber with a 45 yard pass play over the middle for a touchdown. Corniello connected on the kick to make the score 14-0.

North Branford fumbled away the next kickoff and the Indians were set up 45 yards from another score, but Manameit was intercepted in the red zone to end the short lived drive.

In the fourth quarter, the Thunderbirds were finally able to score on a nice pass and catch, but when the receiver was running and clearly stepped out of bounds at the 15 yard line, the defense gave up on the play. The referee missed the call and the receiver went on to score to cut the lead to 14-7.

North Branford tried an onside kick but it was ruled they illegally touched the ball before it went 10 yards, so North Haven took went on the offensive as Manameit took the first snap and cut and slashed his way to the end zone for a 47 yard touchdown to put this game out of reach at 21-7.

This game ended early after several warnings for late hits and cheap shots, the referees met with coaches and gave the "one more time" speech. A few plays after this meeting, a late hit by North Branford ended the game with 1:30 left.

Week 7 Game Schedule
10/25/12: Daniel Hand Freshmen 36, North Haven Freshmen 28 (OT)
10/26/12: Daniel Hand Varsity 24, North Haven Varsity 7
10/27/12: North Haven JV 22, Daniel Hand JV 20

Week 7

The Freshmen team looked to have Daniel Hand beat on several occasions in this game, but could not seal the deal. Leading in the first half 14-6 on 1 yard touchdowns by Mike Montano and Connor Suraci and a pair of Brendan Eckles kicks, North Haven was driving for a third score, but the Indians turned the ball over on downs deep in the Tigers end and settled for an 8 point half time lead. But Hand got the opening kickoff to start the second half and went right down and scored. North Haven stuffed the 2 point conversion and retained a 2 point lead and then scored after a 43 yard run by Nick Ponzio set up Montano's second touchdown run from 2 yards out to open back up a 9 point advantage at 21-12. In the fourth quarter, Hand passed their way to a third touchdown and converted on the 2 point conversion to make it 21-20. North Haven responded with a nice time consuming drive which culminated in a 12 yard touchdown run on a double hand off by Pat McKenna which opened up a 28-20 lead. After a Montano interception, Ponzio's 50 yard run helped North Haven drive to the Tigers 3 yard line and they could have put this game away but Eckles' 20 yard field goal clanked off the left upright with 90 seconds to play. Hand passed their way down to the Indians' 30 yard line and with seconds to play scored a touchdown on a pass to the far left corner. The Tigers scored the 2 point conversion with a completed pass to tie the game at 28 as the North Haven defender fell down. The Tigers won the coin toss and got the ball first and scored a touchdown on 2 rushing plays and then passed for the 2 point conversion to take their first lead of the game at 36-28. North Haven's fourth down try ended up inches short and Daniel Hand hung on to win 36-28.

The JV Indians built up a 22-7 haltime lead on Daniel Hand and then hung on to win 22-20. The Tigers took the opening kickoff and moved across midfield before fumbling it away on a fake punt attempt. North Haven converted with a short drive which culminated with an Evan Manameit 1 yard touchdown run on 4th down. Joe Corniello converted the extra point kick for a 7-0 Indian lead. Hand took the ensuing kickoff and passed their way down and scored quickly and tied the score at 7 in the second. North Haven's next drive saw Manameit convert a 50 yard pass play to Corniello, and then Manameit ran for a first down again on 4th down before Christian Black took it in for a 2 yard score. Setting up for a kick, Manameit executed the fake beautifully, running around the end for a 2 point conversion and a 15-7 lead. Emadi Okuosa made in interception to stop the Tigers' next drive and give the Indians the ball on Hands' 40 yard line. After a nice run by Manameit down to the 2 yard line, Mike Montano took it in for a touchdown with a few seconds left in the half. Corniello converted the kick and North Haven took a 22-7 lead into halftime. It was all Tigers in the second half as they passed their way to North Haven's goal line in the third only to be turned away on downs. In the fourth, Hand passed for a pair of touchdowns to cut the lead to within 22-20, but the Indians stuffed a pass attempt to prevent the 2 point conversion to win the game.

Week 6 Game Schedule
10/18/12: North Haven Freshmen 40, Sheehan Freshmen 7
10/20/12: North Haven JV vs. Sheehan JV, canceled
10/20/12: North Haven Varsity 42, Sheehan Varsity 7

Week 6

The Freshmen team scored five touchdowns in the first half and built up a 34-0 lead on Sheehan then went on to an easy 40-7 win. Emadi Okwuosa got things started with a 35 yard punt return for a toouchdown in the first quarter. Okwuosa scored a second touchdown shortly after on a double hand off sweep around the left side from 20+ yards out to make it 14-0. In the second, the Indians opened up a 20-0 lead when Mike Montano hit Dave Mikos with a screen pass which resulted in a 50 yard touchdown. Connor Suraci sprinted through the line to score a another touchdown in the second from 20+ yards and North Haven was rolling at 27-0. For good measure, Geno Giano scored on a 12-yard run around the left side to give the Indians a 34-0 lead at halftime. Sheehan tried to get back in this game by attempting an onside kick to start the second half, but North Haven recovered it, and then Pat McKenna ran for a 60 yard touchdown on the next play to make it 40-0. Sheehan finally got on the board with a 15 yard pass play and then converted the kick to make the final 40-7.

Senior tri-captain Jalon White paced North Haven's offense with 128 yards rushing on 15 carries and had three touchdowns as the Indians defeated Sheehan in Wallingford by the score of 42-7.

White scored on a 6 yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put North Haven up 6-0. In the second quarter, Senior Quincy Pecora ran in an 8 yard touchdown and White scored a 2 point conversion to open up a 14-0 lead for the Indians. White added his second touchdown with a short three yard run and Sam Biller kicked the extra point to make it 21-0. Junior Patrick Mikos picked up a fumble and ran it in from five yards out and Biller's second conversion kick put North Haven up 28-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, White scored his 3rd touchdown from 10 yards out and Biller's third kick opened up an insurmountable 35-0 lead. But the Titans would not give up, scoring a 33 yard touchdown on a nice pass play from Brandon Gauthier to Kyle Paolella before the end of the third. Sophomore Cole Pecora ran in a 9 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and Biller's fourth kick capped the scoring in a 42-7 win for the Indians.

North Haven's record now stands at 4 and 2 with a big home game against Daniel Hand coming up this Friday at home.

East Haven finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with a field goal. After forcing the Falcons to punt following their second series, the Indians worked their way and took a 14-0 lead on a 6 yard TD run by Montano on 4th and goal and another Eckles kick. Xavier had a long drive to score with two minutes left in the half to make it 14-7, but on the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Montano took off for a 55 yard TD run to put North Haven up 20-7 after two. In the 3rd, Montano broke through the line on 4th and 2 and took off for a 47 yard score and Eckles made his third kick to give North Haven a commanding 27-7 lead. The JV Indians had a difficult time getting going at Xavier as they fell to the Falcons 34-0. Xavier took the opening kickoff and went right down and scored and didn't stop there adding 3 more before the half - the last of which coming as the second quarter expired. In the fourth quarter, the Indians were finally able to get a drive going and pushed the ball inside the Falcons 10 yard line, but a fumble ended the drive.
